The Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaced most indirect taxes in India. Once your business is registered, you receive a 15-digit GSTIN and can collect GST from customers and claim input tax credit on your purchases.

When is GST registration mandatory?

  • Turnover limit: when your aggregate annual turnover crosses the threshold — generally ₹40 lakh for suppliers of goods and ₹20 lakh for service providers in Maharashtra.
  • Inter-state supply of goods, in most cases, regardless of turnover.
  • Selling through e-commerce marketplaces such as Amazon or Flipkart (goods).
  • Casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons and businesses liable to pay tax under reverse charge.

Note: Thresholds and rules are revised from time to time by the GST Council. We always check the current limits for your exact business before filing.

Voluntary registration — is it worth it?

Many small businesses register even below the limit. It lets you claim input tax credit, work with larger corporate clients who prefer GST-registered vendors, and bid for tenders that ask for a GSTIN.

Documents usually required

  • PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, partners or directors, and their photographs.
  • Proof of business constitution — partnership deed, incorporation certificate or LLP agreement.
  • Proof of the principal place of business — electricity bill plus rent agreement or ownership document.
  • Bank account details — cancelled cheque or bank statement.
  • Authorisation letter or board resolution for the authorised signatory.

The process

  1. Fill Part A on the GST portal with PAN, mobile and email, and verify by OTP.
  2. Complete Part B with business, promoter, address and bank details and upload documents.
  3. Complete Aadhaar authentication (or physical verification, if required).
  4. Respond to any clarification sought by the officer.
  5. Download your GST registration certificate once it is approved.

After registration

Registration is only the start. You must issue GST-compliant invoices and file returns on time — typically GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B — or late fees and interest apply.
