Udyam Registration is the Government of India’s registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar system and is entirely online. Once registered, you receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate.
Who can register?
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing, production, processing or providing services that falls within the MSME limits for investment and turnover can register — proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs and companies alike. Registration is based on the Aadhaar number of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory.
7 benefits of Udyam registration
- Easier access to credit — MSMEs get priority-sector lending and access to collateral-free loan schemes.
- Protection against delayed payments — buyers are required to pay registered MSMEs within the timelines set by law.
- Government tender benefits — many tenders offer EMD exemptions and preferences for MSMEs.
- Subsidies and schemes — eligibility for various central and state schemes.
- Lower costs — concessions on certain fees, such as patent and trademark filings.
- Credibility — a government-issued certificate builds trust with clients and lenders.
- It’s free — there is no government fee for Udyam registration.
Watch out: Udyam registration is free on the official portal. Be careful of websites that look official but charge for “registration”.
