Running a shop, office, clinic, agency or any commercial establishment in Mumbai? You need to register under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act. In Mumbai this registration is popularly known as the Gumasta licence.
What is the Gumasta licence?
It is a registration certificate that authorises you to carry on business at a particular place. In Mumbai, it is administered through the Municipal Corporation, and elsewhere in Maharashtra through the relevant labour authority.
Who needs it?
- Shops, retail stores and showrooms.
- Offices of companies, LLPs, partnerships and proprietors — including consultants and service providers.
- Restaurants, clinics, salons, agencies and other commercial establishments.
Why it matters
- It is a legal requirement for operating your establishment.
- It works as proof of business address — banks commonly ask for it when you open a current account.
- It is often needed for other registrations and licences, including PSARA for security agencies.
Documents usually required
- Identity and address proof of the owner / partners / directors.
- Proof of the business premises (rent agreement or ownership document) and a recent utility bill.
- Entity documents, if applicable (partnership deed, incorporation certificate, etc.).
- A photograph of the establishment showing the name board.
Remember: Any change in the business name, address, ownership or number of employees should be updated on the registration. We can help with amendments too.
