A Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is an official document issued after a background check by the police or the relevant government authority. It states whether the applicant has any criminal record.

When do you need a PCC?

  • Employment — many employers ask for police verification before hiring.
  • Security agencies — guards and supervisors are verified before deployment, and owners and directors are verified as part of the PSARA licence process.
  • Visas and immigration — for work, study or residence abroad (issued through the Passport Seva system).
  • Tenant verification, licences and other official purposes.

Two common types

  • Passport PCC — for going abroad; applied through the Passport Seva portal.
  • Local police verification / character certificate — for jobs and local purposes; applied with the State police service.

Documents usually required

  • Identity proof (Aadhaar, PAN, voter ID or passport).
  • Current address proof and, where needed, previous address details.
  • Recent passport-size photograph.
  • Purpose of the certificate (for example, an employer’s letter).

Tip: Make sure your name and address match across all documents — mismatches are the most common reason for delays.
